Major employment law changes in April 2019
PMEs will be covered under the Employment Act(EA)
Significant changes to the EA are expected to become law by April 2019.
It is said that about 430,000 PMEs will benefit from this update.
Here are majour changes:
1) All core employee benefits under the EA being extended to PMEs. These include:
- Annual leave, paid sick leave / hospitalisation leave
- Paid public holidays
- Timely payment of salary
- Maternity protection
- Childcare leave, etc.
2) Unfair dismissal and salary-related claims will be submitted only to the ECT. (Currently both MOM and ECT are involved)
3) Extensive protection to more non-workmen
- Part IV of the EA will be applied to (a) Workmen earning up to S$4,500 per month and
(b) Non-workmen earning up to S$2,500 per month.
As PMETs make up 56 per cent of the local workforce, and Japanese companies in Singapore has many employees in these positions, employers need to review the changes against their current policies.
