Did you know that 77 jobs were available for every 100 job seekers in December 2016.
However, 77 of them were not taken up by them.
In the past 2 years, lots of Singaporeans in PMETs positions have been retrencehd.
Why unemployed Singaporeans would rather being jobless or income zero?
The article on MoneySmart Blog introduces interesting findings: 3 reasons unemployed Singaporeans still remain jobless.
1) Lack of skills that jobs require
Many of the recent high-level jobs require skills that older jobseekers or young graduates may not have.
For example, such jobs as software engineers, data scientists, digital marketers and digital product managers.
Although the SkillsFuture program encourages people to take up these skills, S$500 short course may not be good enough to get
these jobs unless further education and experiences are provided.
2) Too little pay to support their life
Such jobs in security or service industories usually need employees to work longer
although pay is insufficient to support their households.
Those retrenched PMETs would think that it does not make sense to take up these jobs.
3) No interest in the job
Especially younger employees care more about if their work in aligned with their lifestyle, long-term goals and interests.
If their interests don't match, they may not urge themselves to take up jobs and remain being jobless.
On top of these 3 reasons, now there are more short-term money-making options available,
such as giving tuition or driving for Grab or Uber.
With these options, unemployed Singaporeans might not rush to take up full-time jobs unless they are really ideal.
