Rising demand for "Shop for Bodies" in Singapore
Employment trend 2013
Flexible employment style has been on the rise in the past few years, reported on MyPaper dated of December 17, 2013.
Instead of hiring permanent staffs, more companies are shopping bodies with specific knowledge based skills for the project as and when they need to.
Hiring contract workers can benefit employers as it saves cost on manpower and time on training talent.
Mr Michael Smith, country director of Randstad Singapore, says: "In some cases, it may be because the company is operating under leaner conditions, and sees hiring contractors per project as a more economical solution. For others, it may be a case of needing a swift solution in plugging gaps with a high level of expertise, as a result of talent shortages in their industry."
On the other hand, contact workers also have benefits. "They can get the chance to upskill themselves quickly and expand their networks", points out Mr Joel Hides, associate director of Robert Walters Singapore.
Another industry expert warns, "Management-consulting companies can't afford to be generalist anymore. They have to build deep focuses across various industries, which is what sourcing companies look for these days".
